Debt review crisis

Good day, would you be able to give me some advice please? I’m desperate. I placed myself under debt review some years ago which I paid faithfully for 3 years until one day they came and repossessed my car! When I enquired from the debt counselor at the time I was told that the public distribution agency had not allocated any of my funds during that time. I required statements from her but never received them and was told at the time that trying to fight the PDA was useless. I then stopped paying the debt counselor due to losing my job as I was a rep and without a car lost my job. This is now already 6 years ago. Who can I get to assist me with this as I am obviously now unable to get any type of credit at all. The debt counselor involved has since disappeared and I am unable to trace her. All of these debts would fall under prescription as I have not been contacted by any creditor for over six years. I am desperate to sort this out as it is creating terrible problems for me. Please can you advise?

Hi there,

Thank you for getting in touch.

Chances are good that the debt has prescribed. I would suggest that you start by pulling your credit profile to see what the damage is. You could then lodge a dispute, stating that the debt has prescribed, thus the information on the credit report is incorrect.

Furthermore, you would have to find a debt counsellor to update your debt review status to “Withdrawn”. You could also lodge a complaint with the National Credit Regulator with regards to your debt counsellor who disappeared.

Hope this info helps.
