Questions & AnswersDebt Collectors
Bongani asked 2 years ago

The creditors sent me a note saying they already submitted my information to debt collectors. How should I handle the situation? Any help?

Hi there,

Thank you for your question.

If you are in the debt review process we would urge you to contact your debt counsellor soonest. Remember to keep all correspondence between you and the creditor so that it can be documented by your debt counsellor. Your debt counsellor will then contact the creditor on your behalf to resolve the issue.

If you have not yet applied for debt review, you are able to do so at this point in time. Only if the collectors have continued to issue a summons would they be excluded from the debt review.

If you do not wish to go under debt review, I would urge you to make arrangements with the debt collectors and then pay them religiously. Also keep in mind that the longer your account remains with the debt collectors, the more fees will be added. They charge extra if they phone you, send you an account statement, or if they send you an SMS – everything they do has a price attached to it. The quicker you can get rid of the debt, the better.

Hope this info helps.
