I was in a lot of debt and applied for debt review. Now after having sent through the forms to my debt counsellor and cancelling debit orders, my counsellor only then informed me of the fees I had to pay her. This ended up being a lot of money that I actually could not afford. After telling her this, she was no longer in contact with me and me with her. So I continued to pay my debts bit by bit as best I could.
Over a year later, when opening a new bank account I found that on my credit record it states that I am under debt review. For a year since then, I have tried to make contact with my debt counsellor with no luck. No answers to my calls and no replies to my emails. I am getting very frustrated now as I need to buy a house and a car and I need to remove this off my name. I am still paying off my debts bit by bit. I want to know how I can go about getting this removed off my record.
Thank you for your question.
What you must keep in mind when your debt review is cancelled is that your debt review will be listed on your credit profile until a Form 19 is issued. This can only happen when your original installments according to original contractual terms can be maintained or if your debt is settled.
If you are having no luck communicating with your debt counsellor we would recommend you lodge a dispute with the Credit Ombud (Here is a link to their page explaining the complaint procedure) or the National Credit Regulator (Here is a link to their page explaining the complaint procedure).
Hope this information helps.
